101 Biggest Lies... #11 to #15
#11: Indiana is a Primary Terror Target
The Department of Homeland Security's decision to slash the city's anti-terrorism funding by 40% may be political payback, Mayor Bloomberg suggested yesterday.
Last October, Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly announced a massive security alert on the subways after receiving intelligence information they described as a "specific threat" to NYC.
Homeland Security quickly- and publicly- cast doubt on the intelligence that prompted the alert, but were later humiliated when it was discovered that two department officials sent private e-mails warning their friends and family of a possible subway attack.
"Whether this is a little bit of getting even with us for embarrassing them, I don't know," Bloomberg said. "Everything in Washington is driven by politics, that's one of the problems with our system,"
Blue states most at risk for domestic terrorism took substantial funding hits in 2006, while red states enjoyed the opposite. New York is actually granted the least Homeland Security dollars per citizen. Sparsely populated red states like Wyoming, Dick Cheney's (not really) home, receive the most, even in the absence of historical or other landmarks which would be likely terrorist targets.
#12: Glenn Beck Just Says What Everyone is Thinking
Headline News host Glenn Beck equates Al Gore to Hitler.
On the June 7 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio program, CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck became the latest right-winger to compare An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore’s documentary film about global warming, to the Nazis. Beck dismissed many of the conclusions drawn from the documentary, stating, “When you take a little bit of truth and then you mix it with untruth, or your theory, that’s where you get people to believe... It’s like Hitler. Hitler said a little bit of truth, and then he mixed in ‘and it’s the Jews’ fault.’ That’s where things get a little troublesome, and that’s exactly what’s happening [in An Inconvenient Truth]."
Beck echoes Sterling Burnett, senior fellow at the far right National Center for Policy Analysis, who called the film “propaganda” . Burnett added: “You don’t go see Joseph Goebbels’ films to see the truth about Nazi Germany. You don’t want to go see Al Gore’s film to see the truth about global warming.”
#13: America is an Equal Opportunity Country
If a Cuban leaves his country, braves the ocean perils (and the Coast Guard), and can set just one toe on U.S. soil, our immigration laws declare the Cuban a guest in America, with an automatic invitation to stay.
BUT- if a Hatian, Mexican, Dominican, etc, set at least one of THEIR toes on U.S. soil, what happens? Arrest, deportation, anything BUT "Welcome to America."
And one big ddifference between the Cuban and every other illegal immigrant who longs to set foot on our shores? Cubans tend to vote Republican, while other minorities tend to vote Democrat.
#14: Republicans Care About Working Folk
The Republican Congress has stubbornly refused to raise the $5.15 per hour minimum wage. For the seventh time in the past 10 years, however, the Republican Congress has voted to give itself another juicy pay raise, bringing lawmakers' basic annual salaries to almost $170,000 per year.
Which of us who work for a living could expect a cost of living increase every year (especially if our job performance rated less than 25% boss approval)? Not to mention the countless percs, overly-generous pension plans, and taxpayer supported free healthcare- FOR LIFE.
Since 1998, the Republican Congress has increased its own salary by an average $30,000, about three times the yearly salary of a minimum wage worker. At the same time, minimum-wage workers are essentially receiving an automatic pay CUT each year [NOTE: If the minimum wage had kept pace with its 1968 value, it would today be worth $9 an hour].
About a week after granting itself a raise, the 109th Republican Congress once again rejected an increase in the minimum wage.
#15: Our Mainstream Media is Liberal
A Lexis/Nexis search finds 13,641 mainstream media stories, published during Election 2000, about Bill Clinton 'dodging the draft' (even though he wasn't running for office). By contrast, there were only 49 such stories about W's alleged AWOL, or his actual suspension from flying for refusing to appear for mandatory urine testing. The Liberal Media strikes again, it seems.
