Another Conspiracy Verified
March 12th, 2010In a presentation to my 10th grade critical thinking class, I linked this story–that a bizarre American intelligence operation might have caused an entire French village to go crazy in the early 1950’s–to numerous other longstanding conspiracy theories about the CIA.
The teacher made some comment about critical thinking needing to involve actual thinking, and that any mention of CIA conspiracy necessarily excluded thought processes (because America just didn’t do that sort of thing). He told to stop talking and sit down, and admonished the class to beware the seduction of pseudo-intellectual conspiracy theory.
Since then, most of the conspiracy gems I tried to report on as a student have been verified; the 2007 FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act) release of the CIA’s “Family Jewels” documents validated a butt-load more. I haven’t seen that teacher since graduation, and wonder if he ever felt silly for trying to squash the Punky out of me.
French bread spiked with LSD in CIA experiment
A 50-year mystery over the ‘cursed bread’ of Pont-Saint-Esprit, which left residents suffering hallucinations, has been solved after a writer discovered the US had spiked the bread with LSD as part of an experiment.

An American investigative journalist has uncovered evidence suggesting the CIA peppered local food with the hallucinogenic drug LSD
In 1951, a quiet, picturesque village in southern France was suddenly and mysteriously struck down with mass insanity and hallucinations. At least five people died, dozens were interned in asylums and hundreds afflicted.
For decades it was assumed that the local bread had been unwittingly poisoned with a psychedelic mould. Now, however, an American investigative journalist has uncovered evidence suggesting the CIA peppered local food with the hallucinogenic drug LSD as part of a mind control experiment at the height of the Cold War.
The mystery of Le Pain Maudit (Cursed Bread) still haunts the inhabitants of Pont-Saint-Esprit, in the Gard, southeast France.
On August 16, 1951, the inhabitants were suddenly racked with frightful hallucinations of terrifying beasts and fire.
One man tried to drown himself, screaming that his belly was being eaten by snakes. An 11-year-old tried to strangle his grandmother. Another man shouted: “I am a plane”, before jumping out of a second-floor window, breaking his legs. He then got up and carried on for 50 yards. Another saw his heart escaping through his feet and begged a doctor to put it back. Many were taken to the local asylum in strait jackets.
Time magazine wrote at the time: “Among the stricken, delirium rose: patients thrashed wildly on their beds, screaming that red flowers were blossoming from their bodies, that their heads had turned to molten lead.”
Eventually, it was determined that the best-known local baker had unwittingly contaminated his flour with ergot, a hallucinogenic mould that infects rye grain. Another theory was the bread had been poisoned with organic mercury.
However, H P Albarelli Jr., an investigative journalist, claims the outbreak resulted from a covert experiment directed by the CIA and the US Army’s top-secret Special Operations Division (SOD) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.
The scientists who produced both alternative explanations, he writes, worked for the Swiss-based Sandoz Pharmaceutical Company, which was then secretly supplying both the Army and CIA with LSD.
Mr Albarelli came across CIA documents while investigating the suspicious suicide of Frank Olson, a biochemist working for the SOD who fell from a 13th floor window two years after the Cursed Bread incident. One note transcribes a conversation between a CIA agent and a Sandoz official who mentions the “secret of Pont-Saint-Esprit” and explains that it was not “at all” caused by mould but by diethylamide, the D in LSD.
While compiling his book, A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA’s Secret Cold War Experiments, Mr Albarelli spoke to former colleagues of Mr Olson, two of whom told him that the Pont-Saint-Esprit incident was part of a mind control experiment run by the CIA and US army.
After the Korean War the Americans launched a vast research programme into the mental manipulation of prisoners and enemy troops.
Scientists at Fort Detrick told him that agents had sprayed LSD into the air and also contaminated “local foot products”.
Mr Albarelli said the real “smoking gun” was a White House document sent to members of the Rockefeller Commission formed in 1975 to investigate CIA abuses. It contained the names of a number of French nationals who had been secretly employed by the CIA and made direct reference to the “Pont St. Esprit incident.” In its quest to research LSD as an offensive weapon, Mr Albarelli claims, the US army also drugged over 5,700 unwitting American servicemen between 1953 and 1965.
None of his sources would indicate whether the French secret services were aware of the alleged operation. According to US news reports, French intelligence chiefs have demanded the CIA explain itself following the book’s revelations. French intelligence officially denies this.
Locals in Pont-Saint-Esprit still want to know why they were hit by such apocalyptic scenes. “At the time people brought up the theory of an experiment aimed at controlling a popular revolt,” said Charles Granjoh, 71.
“I almost kicked the bucket,” he told the weekly French magazine Les Inrockuptibles. “I’d like to know why.”
Death to the Queers, Sez the Good Rev
March 9th, 2010The Reverend Steven Anderson, pastor of the Faithful Word Baptist church in Tempe, AZ, has been doing a little ‘channeling’ in his Sunday sermons; you don’t need to listen too closely to hear the spirit of the Antichrist whispering in his ear.
[NOTE: The first Tea-Bigot to bring an automatic assault rifle to a Presidential appearance is a member of this Faithful Word Church, and was inspired to arm himself thusly by the sermons of this pastor--who also preached on the death of the President (a different story which shall be told at a different time)]
Here’s the good Rev now, spreading the love of Jesus:
“You wanna know who the biggest hypocrite in the world is? The biggest hypocrite in the world is the person who believes in the death penalty for murderers but not for homosexuals. Hypocrite! The same God who instituted the death penalty for murderers is the same God who instituted the death penalty for rapists and for homosexuals. Sodomites. Queers. That’s what the death penalty was instituted for. OK? That’s God. He hasn’t changed. ‘Oh, God doesn’t feel that way these days’ some say. Well God never felt anything about it…but he commanded and said they should be taken out and killed.
“Do you know why God wanted the Sodomites in the Old Testament to be killed? Do you know why every good king of Israel, the bible says, they got rid of the Sodomites in the land? You know, the good kings that came after the bad kings, who had allowed the Sodomites to infest their land? They had, uh, infiltrated…
“King Asa got the Sodomites out of the land. Jehosephat exterminated the Sodomites that were left from the days of his father Asa. Why? Because the Sodomites are infectuous [sic]. That’s why. Because they’re not reproducers, that goes without saying. They’re recruiters.
“How are they multiplying? Do you not see that they’re multiplying? Are you that blind? Have you noticed that there’s more than there were last year, and the year before, and the year before that? How are they multiplying? Here’s a biology lesson–they’re not reproducers, they’re recruiters! And you know who they’re after? Your children.
“Remember you dropped off your kids last week? That’s who they’re after. Remember, you drop them off and leave them with somebody all the time, you don’t know, whatsay you drop them off at some day care, drop them off at some school somewhere, you don’t know where they’re at…I’ll tell you where they’re at–they’re being recruited by the Sodomites. They’re being molested by the Sodomites. I could tell you so many stories about people that I know being molested and recruited by the Sodomites. They recruit through rape. They recruit through molestation. They recruit through violation. They are, uh, infecting our society. They are spreading their dis-ease…it’s not a physical disease, it’s a sin disease. It’s a wicked, filthy sin disease and it’s spreading on a rampage.
“Can’t you see that it’s spreading on a rampage? I mean, can you not see that? Can you not see that it’s just exploding in growth? Why? Because each Sodomite recruits far more than one other Sodomite. Because his whole life is about recruiting other Sodomites. His whole life is about violating and hurting people and molesting them. So how many Sodomites is one Sodomite going to produce?”
I think the only real question is who was the Sodomite that molested and recruited Reverend Steven? Though maybe we should also ask why members of the Reverend’s congregation drop their children off at unfamiliar places and leave them with people they don’t know or trust, and why they don’t know where they’re at or what they’re doing.?
Tea-Bigot Propaganda Exposed
March 8th, 2010Encouraging to see some mainstream coverage of the GOP 2010 campaign strategy document left behind in a hotel room in Florida. Seems that all along, the whole Democrat/Obama/socialist/communist/maoist thing was invented to scare Tea-Bigots into voting GOP. Many of the images, soundbites and one-liners attached to the Tea-Bigot ‘movement’ are just developed GOP propaganda, it turns out.
No big surprises, really, to punky progressives, but everybody else sure is sure excited by it. Even ‘Dead Intern’ Joe Scarborough ran a segment trashing the GOP playbook on Morning Joe. But don’t expect your average Tea-Bigot to jump at the truth about Democratic tyranny being fabrication. (S)he already knows it, knows that the socialist riff is just cover for the meme-whose-true-nature-can’t-be-acknowledged: “There’s a Nigger in the White House!”
From Leaked Documents Reveal GOP Plan:
National GOP leaders are doing damage control today after a Politico scoop lifted the curtain on the party’s plan to tap voters’ “fear” in the coming campaign season. The PR problem started when an absent-minded attendee at the Republican National Committee (RNC) confab on February 18 in Boca Grande, Florida, left a 72-page document from its 2010 strategizing session in a hotel room. Today, Politico reporter Ben Smith’s expose is making headlines.
The memo tracks the fundraising presentation that RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart delivered to the RNC’s $2,500-a-head annual retreat. The best path to victory in 2010, the document advises, is for Republican candidates to depict themselves as the best hope for resisting the “trending toward socialism” taking shape in a Democrat-dominated Washington.
And the document doesn’t shy from making its points graphically. MSNBC showed the images this morning on “Morning Joe.” The presentation portrays the Obama administration as “The Evil Empire,” including the now-infamous image of President Obama made over in the makeup Heath Ledger used in his performance as the Joker in the 2008 Batman movie “The Dark Knight.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears as Cruella De Vil from “101 Dalmatians,” and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is the witless cartoon dog Scooby-Doo. The memo candidly confirms that the aim of such caricature is to amp up “fear” among the GOP’s conservative base. The memo also makes fun of major RNC donors, categorizing some as “ego-driven” and easily pacified with “tchochkes” (a Slavic word for toys).
It’s a nice piece and all, but Dykes draws a false equivalency with this line:
And Democrats have shown a demagogic streak in the past, depicting George W. Bush and Dick Cheney as Bond-like supervillains and playing up alleged GOP plans to kill Social Security to rally voters behind a popular entitlement program.
Nowadays, the demagoguery of Right and Left are similar the way Drano and Kool-Aid are both liquids. Mountains of documentation indicate Bush and Cheney are indeed Bond-like Supervillians, while we now know for a fact that the fascio-commie-socialist stuff coming from the Right is calculated invention. So how does Dykes square a parallel between the two? And is he really saying that Bush & Co. didn’t mean it when they pounded the privatize social security drum for 2 years, that the Democrats just exaggerated all that?
Time for a Space Station Break
March 5th, 2010Sometimes thinking about outer space helps me decompress. This animation of the 12-year development of the International Space Station helped me relax tonight. Puts everything into perspective, and forces us to readjust visual scale several times.
Then there’s stuff like this giant supernova remnant, about 30,000 years old and (if I did my math right) more than 16,500 of our solar system diameters across. The light we see in this picture left the nebula 3,000 years ago, about the time the Mayans were discovering environmental regulation and forest management.
Did you know? You can regularly view the nighttime passage of the ISS and the space shuttle with the naked eye? Get schedules or downloadable charting applications here.
Pat Robertson’s Haitian ‘Deal With the Devil’ Story
March 1st, 2010U.S. Army counter-intelligence officer Captain Lawrence Rockwood attempted to blow the whistle on the military for criminal negligence during 1994-95’s support mission in Haiti. He claimed that US forces not only turning a blind eye toward gross human rights violations (including torture and murder), but were even actively supporting them. Cpt. Lockwood was court-martialed and eventually kicked out of the service, minus 2/3 of his pay, for his trouble. He said, on the day of his sentencing, “More important than my career, I am concerned that the US Army is attempting to marginalize the Nuremberg principles in the most subtle and quiet manner possible. Indeed, during the seven-day trial, the government side insisted that personal and command responsibility for human rights violations is irrelevant for American military personnel.”
After Lockwood, other soldiers came forward with similar accounts. One wrote under the pseudonym Michael Valentine, and was first published in university and alternative newspapers in the mid-1990’s. His first-hand account, entitled The Belly of the Beast, is chock full of fascinating details and disturbing anecdotes about U.S. complicity in the abuse of the Haitian people. He includes the first iteration I’ve been able to find of the story that crazy Pat Robertson promoted after the Haitian earthquake–that Haitian leaders had made a deal with Satan to help them overthrow their French slave masters in the 19th century, and were now paying the piper for that decision. Seems there’s a CIA angle to the story; find the rest of the story here:
Belly of the Beast
by Michael Valentine
In August of ‘94, just one month before the decision was announced to occupy Haiti, we were instructed to attend an intelligence briefing on Haiti that had been coordinated through the 3rd Special Forces Group staff.
This briefing would be the one and only predeployment intelligence briefing we were to receive. For this presentation, the staff had conscientiously avoided using any of the former Haitian nationals that worked and lived in Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. These included a professor of physics at Fayetteville State University, his wife, a Creole instructor at the Special Forces school, and various Haitian-American soldiers on active duty in Fort Bragg.
To ensure that we had a reliable source for this one and only predeployment brief, our intelligence gurus selected an expatriate, white, American, fundamentalist Protestant preacher. This gentleman had occupied himself for the last 11 years, in a small community outside of Cap Haïtien, salvaging the heathen souls of some 300 local congregants. He was an emaciated, blepharitic man, tall and thin, in a black suit, reeking of Calvinist austerity and burning with years of besieged righteousness.
He began his account with a personal introduction and a brief history of his mission. Then came a brief historical account of the nation of Haiti. The account was perfectly informative as long as it confined itself to events, personalities and dates. What followed his synopsis, however, was a bizarre narrative. He flatly declared that the successful Haitian revolution against the French Army was inaugurated with a bargain. Jean Jacques Dessalines, the Haitian leader of the revolution, according to this preacher, had struck a deal with the devil. With complete seriousness, our intrepid young missionary, explained that Satan himself, disguised as a voodoo deity, contracted with Dessalines to assure him a military victory. In exchange for the victory, Satan was to be given control of the new nation for a period of 200 years.
I’m not sure what surprised me the most at that briefing. The outlandish characterization of the first independent black nation in the Western Hemisphere? The fact that an Intelligence Officer on the Group staff had coordinated for his presence? Or the spellbound attention being paid this crackpot by hundreds of allegedly rational grown men who were in the room listening?
The problem was this. Most of the Special Forces soldiers there had no previous interest in Haiti. Most of them harbored cultural and racial preconceptions of Haiti. All had been exposed to the drumbeat of skewed media coverage of Haiti. Many were fans of both the CIA and Jesse Helms, both of whom were staging a concerted venture to shape foreign policy on behalf of the Cedras regime, by fabricating rumors about Aristide. Almost all of them were thoroughly ignorant of both the history of Haiti and the dynamics of the current crisis…
The takeaway here is that the Pat Robertson tale was probably originated by, and certainly disseminated by, CIA and other US military intelligence as part of an American policy-influence campaign. Over a decade later, the religious right uses the story again to the same desired end.
Flying Thru the Galaxy?
February 24th, 2010If you board a jetliner and begin flying away from the earth at 550 mph, you’ll reach the moon in about 18 days. Stay in that jetliner until your newborn daughter leaves for her third year of college, and you’ll have reached the sun.
Or maybe head in the opposite direction on the day you’re born; at 550 mph you’ll gain Jupiter orbit as an 82 year old woman.
If your family stays on the plane for 750 years, your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson will party on Pluto.
And in 5,000,000 years, when that jetliner finally comes in for a landing on a small planet around Alpha Centauri, the the star nearest to Earth, your family line will have completely disappeared, and what is left of humanity will be floating in zip-lock bags scattered throught the galaxy.
If Dems Kill the Bill, GOP Wins?
February 16th, 2010I like this writer, but she’s swallowed a little too much corporatist DLC (Democratic Leaderhip Council) Kool-Aid this time, by claiming the Dems should pass any bill they can, just to ‘win’:
There is a lot of anger among Progressives and rightly so. But it’s time to take a moment, step back from the fray and above it. The bickering and anger is exactly what Joe Lieberman and Republicans want.
If no health care reform bill is passed at all because Dean and other Democrats are successful in killing the bill, 2010 and 2012 look bleak for Democrats.
Here are my comments, go add your own:
IMO, the GOP won long ago. They won when Obama appointed Max Baucus to shepherd the process; when Obama backed out of his promise to veto any bill that doesn’t include a public option; when Rahm Emmanuel called progressives effing retarded for pressuring Dems into supporting a public option (because it would cost GOP votes later, he said-which we never got anyway); when Obama embraced the MA model requiring all citizens to purchase insurance (a MA resident, my insurance costs have increased 30% in two years, while meds & service coverage has decreased by about as much).
In all fairness, I can’t really characterize any of this as a GOP WIN. They did nothing but nothing, while the Dems did all the giving away. But the real problem started 2 decades ago, when Dems bought into Lee Atwater’s lie that they “must campaign & govern from the center”-after which the Right, & the DLC, began moving the center to the Right. The DLC has ruined the Democratic party. We compromise, and still lose.
Karen Harper, with all due respect, 2010 and 2012 already look bleak for Democrats.
Sarah of the People, at $500 a Plate
February 16th, 2010My comments on a Progressive Politics Examiner piece about Sarah Palin’s $500 a plate dinner awhile back; go there and add your own:
“One correction to Karen Harpers’ piece: The Tea-Bigot trend didn’t begin with Libertarians, but with the Koch Brothers, Newt Gingrinch, Dick Armey, Genn Bleck, and other filthy-rich GOP capitalists. The “Party” got started on 20 Jan 2010, when it dawned on the Right that there really was a N—– in the White House!
“About Sarah… What she really is, over and above all these other things, is corrupt. She got richer as AK gov, and quit her term so she could cash in. Sure, she’s jerk-off fodder for the Right (who are turned on by 50-somethings that look like their moms), but more importantly, she embodies the values her fans cherish: lying, cheating, not paying her own way, getting power without earning it, using taxpayer $$ to enrich herself, avoiding any real tests of merit and character, and giving up when the going gets tough. People worship leaders in whom they can project themselves, and Sarah gives us a clear portrait of the average Tea-Bigot–a frightened liar & cheater who believes (s)he has no option but to steal from others.”
Massachusetts the Police State?
February 14th, 2010While politicians fall all over themselves trying to exploit/avoid the Amy Bishop tragedy, seems everyone’s ignoring the case of a man beaten to death by police over a joint. This is Joe Doyle’s take on it, in a Letter to the Editor of Salem News:
Family Still Seeks Justice
“Stop, children, what’s that sound; everybody look what’s going down.”
- – “For What It’s Worth,” Buffalo Springfield
By Joe F. Doyle
We have recently been inundated by a flock of public officials trying
to associate themselves with the high-profile Amy Bishop
triple-homicide case, because it opened up the possibility that Bishop
was responsible for another homicide — that of her own brother in
1986. This case has elements of everything — associations with
Harvard, Hollywood, money and connections. The current investigation
aims to assure us that no homicide will ever fall through the cracks
again in Massachusetts.
If the governor, legislators and federal investigators are telling us
the truth about wanting to seal up those cracks, I’d like to point out
a Grand Canyon-sized fracture right here in Essex County. It concerns
Ashleigh (15 years old), Dakota (10) and Rayne-Marie (13 months) and
their mother, the widowed Margaret Howe.
Their father, Kenneth R. Howe, was brutally beaten to death on
Thanksgiving Eve 2009, at what is known as a “sobriety checkpoint” in
North Andover. Many Americans feel these checkpoints are violations of
their rights. This one cost Howe his life.
Sobriety checkpoints are not legal in many states. In Massachusetts,
something called a “conditions precedent” is needed to justify their
use. We don’t know if that criterion was met in this case.
The medical examiner has ruled Howe’s death a homicide.
Witnesses have said they saw 10 to 20 police officers stomping and
kicking a man who was lying on the ground at the side of the road. One
said there was no aggression on Howe’s part to instigate a beating; he
next saw Howe, inanimate, being shoved into a state trooper’s cruiser.
According to the state police, Howe was a passenger in the vehicle that
was pulled over and was in possession of a marijuana cigarette. We are
waiting for the results of a DNA test on the alleged joint to prove
that it was Howe’s.
To put this in perspective, if I and nine of my friends had brutally
beaten a state trooper by the side of the road on Thanksgiving Eve, do
you think District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett would have seated a grand
jury by now? Do you think everybody would know who the people who
administered the brutal beating are, and everything about them?
But Blodgett’s reaction to date reminds me of a frightened deer in
somebody’s headlights. He’s not doing his job.
Margaret Howe’s attorney, Frances King, two months ago requested new
U.S. Attorney Carmin Ortiz to take over the investigation because “the
state police can’t investigate the state police.” Never has an incident
been more compelling for federal intervention. Howe was denied his
right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
To date, there have been three different published versions of where
and when Howe died. The one thing we do know is that he was beaten to
death and there has been no grand jury, state or federal, seated.
Meanwhile, the same officers are still driving around with their
firearms.
[Note: Here's the conservative Boston Herald's initial report on the incident].
Members of Howe’s family — the three young girls and their mother –
are suffering emotionally, psychologically and financially. Where is
the justice for the nonfamous, nonwealthy and nonconnected? At this
point, four months out, it is not being provided by either the state or
the federal governments.
The famous Buffalo Springfield song “For What It’s Worth” contains
another line that may be relevant: “There’s a man with a gun over
there, telling me I’ve got to beware.”
A Rich Tradition of Delusion
February 12th, 2010Tonight I spent some time on the website of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, NC. The pastor of this church gained a little notoriety last October by sponsoring a Bible Burning (because there are just too many perversions of the King James Bible loose in the world). His bonfire plans became a minor cause celebre for the burgeoning Birther/T-Bigot movement.
This is classic stuff; you couldn’t make it up:
Come celebrate Halloween by burning Satan’s bibles like the NIV, RSV, NKJV, TLB, NASB, NEV, NRSV, ASV, NWT, Good News for Modern Man, The Evidence Bible, The Message Bible, The Green Bible, ect. These are perversions of God’s Word the King James Bible.
We will also be burning Satan’s music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contempory Christian, jazz, soul, oldies but goldies, etc.
We will also be burning Satan’s popular books written by heretics like Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham, Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa, The Pope, Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning, William Young, etc.
God must not have liked the idea of the good Pastor burning all His Good Books, though, because He caused it to rain for 40 hours and 40 minutes and the burning never occured. According to the church, the event was still a great success for the Lord.
Amazing Grace Baptist Church’s website is full of mundane ugliness. Obama Hussein, death-to-homos, abortion = murder, music is sin kind of stuff. More interesting is the long legacy of barn-burner, old-timey preachin’ that this church celebrates. Turns out that behind the delusional religious messaging is a rich tradition–of con men, mostly. I listened to bits of sermons and song by long-ago masters of religious oratory, men who knew how to squeeze a buck out of an empty wallet. Grace church especially likes this preacher–the Lord’s first real kung fu guy:
The website has dozens, maybe hundreds, of sermon sound files; the preacher rants often include bluegrassy tunes with cute lyrics about Satan and the Bible. There’s a handbook on how to get to hell (spoiler: do nothing, and trust yourself). Scattered across the site are little doctrinal gems like this one: “We believe that the Bible (KJV) is inspired by God. If it wasn’t inspired, it wouldn’t be God’s Word.” Or my personal favorite: “A true scholar is one who believes the Bible (King James Version only) whether he understands it or not.”
In spite of myself, however, I can’t help feeling an affinity with this little fundamentalist church. We’re doing the Lord’s work by condemning so many of the same things:
- * all the goddamned bibles in the world
- * country music
- * Billy Graham
- * the Pope
- * soft and easy music
- * Tim LaHaye (Left Behind author)
- * James Dobson
- * pop music
- * southern gospel (I’m sorry, it depresses me)
- * Rick Warren
- * contempory Christian music
- * and most of all, that poison-spewing, monster-from-hell idiot box:
